Using Images on Twitter to Gain More Followers

The success of businesses in promoting their brands and products to their audiences on Twitter has inspired more entrepreneurs to explore the platform. The number of Twitter users is growing every day and now exceeds more than 275 million with 80% being active on mobile. Twitter is no longer about putting your thoughts together in 140 characters.

Other media such as images can now help entrepreneurs get their message across as well as pull their customer's attention in. Pictures can deliver the right message; especially when you post them the right way, and at the right time.

According to blogger and social media expert, Jeff Bullas (@jeffbullas), sharing photos from a company or brand, is something that over 104 million active users do on Twitter. Over 107 million of these users comment on their friends' photos and videos. Over 171 million share their photos by uploading them from the computer. A side note - these statistics go back into the 2nd quarter of 2013; and this does not include the active Twitter users who use their mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones. Its compelling.

On the downside tweets including Instagram links are 42% less likely to be retweeted. Facebook image links are 47% less likely to be retweeted. This may be attributed to the fact that images from Instagram and Facebook show up on Twitter as links not photos. This means you can maximise your Twitter engagement by posting images directly from Twitter, instead of syncing these platforms to Twitter.

Users prefer the old saying "When on twitter stay on twitter".

Maximise your Header Image on Twitter first

As of July this year, Twitter headers were made customisable. This means more real estate for you for branding, product placement and other promotions. There really are some very interesting twitter cover options and many companies are pushing the way in they use this real estate space.

This year the Transeo team used the header image space for Christmas and to reflect the individual personalities of each of our core business directors and owners.

May Abrera - General Manager @may_transeo has a Tiffany inspired cover this year to show she likes the finer things in life.

Marc Madanguit - Support Director @marc_transeo wanted to showcase his love for the game of football and his favourite team Barcelona, did Santa score?

Ces Guisiona - Customer Service Director @ces_transeo and her family this year welcomed a new baby girl to the world and it was all about family for her this Christmas. We all know how little boys like train sets too!

Angelica Manlunas - Content and Social Media Director @ang_transeo showcases her personal side by sharing her love for all things baking, a glass of wine and a very cool christmas tree.

Mia Alarin - Finance and HR Director @mia_transeo wanted to show her continued love for Australia and after her first trip down under this year would one day like to be on boat while enjoying the fireworks!

Adam Mole - Proprietor @adam_transeo this year wanted to share his passion for the beach, beer and a board shorts santa, of course Rudolf got to go on vacation too.

Here are some other image options you might want to include on your Twitter header image:

1. Behind-the-scenes look of your office, production or employee activities.
2. A products or service plug.
3. Upcoming events. Create header photos for your upcoming events such as a company organized conference or an eBook launch.
4. Creative images that speak about your product. For inspiration, you can look at Adobe Illustrator or Canva's header photos.

Using images on twitter posts

Images gain up to 30% more retweets than just your standard text. This is extremely helpful for businesses. Images bring in impressions and engagement to your business’ Twitter account.

 Upload photos directly from Twitter.

 Choose your images wisely -

1. Choose images that convey emotion.
2. Change it up. Post different types of images such as infographics, banners, memes and photos.
3. Post good quality pictures. Use photo editing software available to you or hire a graphic artist to help you.

If you need to edit your images, you can use various photo-editing softwares. These are going to be useful for you since image editing will also come in handy for your normal image posts. Adobe, Photoscape, GIMP, Serif Photo Plus, Picasa and Paint.Net are just some of the names in photo-editing software. You can also go with the online alternatives like, Pixlr.com, iPiccy, Canva and Fotor.

Now, you can add 4 photos in just one Tweet, and will automatically create a collage.

General Electric takes advantage of this feature to tell a story:

You can now also tag people on your Tweets. You just select the photo you want to upload and tap, "Who's in this photo?" Twitter will then let you type in the names of the people you want to tag. How it will appear on your tweet is that, the tags will show next to your photo.

The use of captions still remains to create a significant impact on your post. Yes, the photos will say a lot of the message you want to spread. The caption will create an emphasis. It will reaffirm what want to tell your audience.

Make sure you post these photos at the right time. Fridays and weekends get more engagement. If your business is off on the weekends, make sure to schedule tweets and images ahead of time.

Images can help you liven up your Twitter feed. They are effective in inspiring conversation between you and your target audience. Would you like to learn more about how you can effectively use Twitter? Download our free ebook here or join in on the conversation at #TwitterforSMB.
