Starting a Pinterest Business Page

Pinterest is not only for cooks, crafty moms, and aspiring brides. It's not just another social media site either. With a massive 50 million Pinners worldwide, this visual platform has now emerged as a contender in the social media sphere, particularly the retail sector.

A survey at Mashable.com outlines that Pinterest converts more browsers into buyers, generates tons of traffic to websites, and helps businesses discover what their customers love. Plus 70% of brand engagement on Pinterest is user-generated - which is good news for businesses.

If your business isn't on Pinterest yet, now's the time to start.

Pinterest for Businesses

In 2012, Pinterest has launched its business account feature. Large or small businesses, non-profit organisations, and even bloggers can join Pinterest as a business - for free.

While both personal and business accounts have the same outward appearance, there are a few key differences.

With a business account, you have newly formatted terms of service, the ability to sign up or log in using your business name, access to upcoming features exclusively for businesses, and updates on how to get the best results for your business on Pinterest.

Set up a business account

A business account can be set up in two ways:
1. Create a brand new account or 2. Convert a personal account into a business-friendly one.

To create a brand new account, follow these simple steps:

1. Go to Pinterest for Business and click the Join as Business button.
2. You'll be led to a page where you can create a new account. Fill out details regarding your business and the person managing the account.

Pick a profile image that represents your business. It can be a logo or the same profile photo your business has on other social media profiles. Profile images look best at 160 x 165 pixels.
Include a short message about your business. Introduce your brand and let people know what inspires you.
As of now, only one email address can be on a business account at a time. Multiple admins are not yet allowed.

3. Agree to the new business terms of service agreement and privacy policy and click Create.
To convert an existing personal account to a business account, here's what to do
1. Log in to your account.
2. Go to Pinterest for Business. Click Convert now below the Join as Business button.
3. Change or add needed details regarding your business page.
4. Read and accept to the new business terms of service and click Convert.

Verify your website with Pinterest
After creating an account or converting your current one, you will have to verify your business website to let Pinners know you’re a trustworthy source. Your account will then be officially enlisted as a Pinterest business page and you’ll gain access to Pinterest analytics.

Create Pinboards

Identify a theme for your Pinterest boards. This theme should be consistent with the type of business that you have. For example if you run an online clothing store, the idea behind your pin board content should gravitate towards your products and fashion trends. Using one concept for your pinboards amplifies your identity so when someone sees one of your pinboards, they will know what to expect when they decide to follow you.

Some users may follow one of your boards and not your entire account. The theme for your boards should be consistent across all of your pinboards. Your brand should come through even if your audience is only able to see one pin board from your entire account.

Participate in Group Boards

Join group boards. Pinterest is an effective tool for marketing and growing your online audience. One of the reasons for this is the group boards. When you are a member of a group board, you are able to pin to these boards. All your pins are then visible to all members of these boards.

Since a group board follows a theme or a category, you are able to join groups with members that are interested with the same products or services.

Create your own group board. Create a board and allow your audience to join in. Simply click on ‘Edit Board’ and start adding people to the ‘Who Can Pin’ Section. When inviting people to join in your group board, choose people who will likely have ‘relevant’ pins. While growing your pin board followers is necessary, you want the theme of the group board to be preserved. For example, if you have a board on writing or content marketing, you would avoid inviting ‘Homemade Recipes’ to that group board.

After people have accepted your invite, your group pin board will now appear on their page and anyone will be able to follow it from there. This is how Pinterest group boards can help you grow your audience exponentially

Bonus Tip:  Make your website “Pinnable”

Adding a 'Follow' or 'Pin It' button is a quick, easy, and efficient way to get people involved in your business. The buttons allow your audience to follow your Pinterest activities or share things they find interesting from your website. These people will most likely follow you on Pinterest as well.

Adding a 'Pin It' button to your site is free and easy. Just follow the instructions here

Now you're ready. Enjoy pinning!
